Here are the best new films of the year, plus the best international releases.


The BFG (Disney) The BFB is the third installment in Disney’s long-running, critically-acclaimed action franchise.

It is directed by Josh Trank and stars Jason Sudeikis as an old man who is suddenly awoken from a coma and transported to a future Earth where he is joined by his old pal Biggs and the gang from the future.

The BFB opens in the UK on 12 October 2019, with a US release on 18 October 2019.


A Tale of Two Cities (Disney, Disney Classics) This story about two brothers who come to New York City in the 1970s is one of Disney’s biggest success stories.

In this tale of friendship, family and the pursuit of love, the Brothers’ adventures are made all the more special when they come to the attention of the man who has taken their father’s place in the family: Jack Nicholson.

In a story of both great adventure and tragedy, the BFG is a classic.


The Secret Life of Pets (MGM) The first feature film from Disney, starring Tom Hanks as a pet-loving family in search of the missing little guy, The Secret Lives of Pets follows the adventures of two brothers as they search for their beloved, lost little guy.

MGM will be releasing the film on 10 October 2019 in the US and 10 October 2020 in the United Kingdom.


The Little Mermaid (Disney/Pixar) Disney’s second film, this film follows Ariel, a young girl who has been transformed into a mermaid by King Triton and is given the role of a princess by the King.

The film is a sequel to the 1999 animated film that was also released by Disney.


The Lion King: The Musical (Epcot) This musical features the voices of George C. Scott, Carmen Electra, Marjorie Carey and Meryl Streep as the Lion King and his friends.

It opened in the U.S. on 19 November 2019 and is also slated for a 2019 release in the European Union.


The LEGO Movie (Universal) The LEGO movie is the fifth film from Universal Pictures.

The films features characters such as Boba Fett, Woody and R2-D2.

The first film in the franchise was released in 2002 and is a hit with critics.


The Legend of Tarzan (Universal Pictures) The film follows a group of humans and their ape-like ape friends as they travel to the island of Zong in the jungle.


The Witch (Universal Studios) The Witch is a story about a witch named Charlotte who has to fight against the evil forces of the Lord of the Rings while trying to escape the evil lord Mordred.

It was the first Disney film to be released in the English-speaking world.


The Jungle Book (Disney Pixar) A story about the adventures and adventures of a group that lives in the forests of Africa in this animated film from Pixar.

It also stars Bill Murray, Jessica Chastain, Andy Serkis, John C. Reilly and Zendaya.


Thor: Ragnarok (Marvel) The third Thor film from Marvel Studios follows the heroes from the film Thor as they investigate a new threat to Earth.

The movie opens in 2019 with a UK release on 2 November 2019.


The Book of Life (Disney Classics) A series of two books about the lives of people living on Earth, The Book is a novel about the life of a young woman named Alice, and the Book of the Dead is about the death of a man named Ollibean.

The series also stars Matthew McConaughey, Kristen Wiig, Bill Murray and Robert Pattinson.


Beauty and the Beast (Disney Studios) A children’s fairy tale with a twist.

It follows Belle, the most beautiful of the fairies, who is forced to choose between her life as a prince and her job as a maid to the king.


The Nutcracker (Disney Parks) This is the first film from Walt Disney Pictures after his departure from Disney.

It tells the story of a scientist who is searching for a cure for a rare disease that is spreading throughout the world.

It opens in New Zealand on 1 October 2019 and will be released on 9 October 2019 globally.


The Avengers: Age of Ultron (Marvel Studios) This is the sequel to Disney’s blockbuster, Age of Apes, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, and Chris Evans as Bruce Banner.


Coco (Universal Universal) This animated film tells the tale of a girl named Coco, who joins forces with an alien robot named Riku, to save the world from an invasion.
